OVERCOMING THE FEAR OF SELFISHNESS

  • The fear of selfishness is an old form of protection. While the restriction of this fear can be frustrating, try to be gentle, grateful and patient with it. Being mindfully aware of its presence is likely to give you more freedom and choice.
  • Feel the difference when you shift your thinking from selfish to self-connected. Strengthening healthy self-connection is what will empower you to move from the Forgotten Carer style of relating into a dynamically defined person who is leading your fullest life.
  • Practice backing yourself with the mantra “I’m here too”.
  • Anchor yourself in negotiating what you really need. Practice asking yourself “What do I need or could I need in this situation?” in your private moments. You don’t need complete clarity. Simply get in the habit of asking yourself.
